Early Life and EducationZeno of Citium, a renowned ancient Greek philosopher, was born in the Greco-Phoenician city of Citium (Kition) on the island of Cyprus.
Stoic philosophers
Little is known about his early life, except that his father, Mnaseas, was a merchant.
Around 320 BC, Zeno relocated to Athens and became a disciple of the Cynic philosopher Crates. However, dissatisfied with the Cynics' "shameless" lifestyle, he transitioned to studying under Stilpon and the dialectician Diodorus.
Founding Stoicism
Zeno's teachings attracted numerous followers, who initially called themselves Zenoneans after him.
Later, they adopted the name "Stoics," derived from the "Painted Porch" (Stoa Poikile) where Zeno held his lessons.
